In 2022, about 2.9 million Californians aged 12 and older (9%) were affected by a substance use disorder. Among these individuals, 6% experienced symptoms of alcohol abuse or dependence, while roughly 4% were dealing with abuse or dependence on illicit drugs.
That same year, California had 1,525 substance use treatment facilities that served 90,992 clients and 817 mental health treatment facilities that provided care to 122,361 clients. Despite these resources, a significant portion of Californians with mental health issues did not receive the care they needed. In 2023, approximately 3.8 million adults in California, or 62.6% of those with a mental health disorder, went without treatment. Among the 1.6 million adults who did not receive necessary mental health care in 2021, 35.3% cited cost as a barrier.
