Statistics and Information on Addiction Therapy and Treatment in California
Only about 10% of people with a substance use disorder (SUD) received treatment in the past year, according to the California Health Care Foundation. Opioid and psychostimulant overdose deaths continue to rise in California, with access to effective therapy remaining a significant challenge.
In 2022, an estimated 1.48 million people in Los Angeles County needed SUD treatment, based on the national prevalence rate of 17.3%. Each year, 12,752 patients participate in the state’s non-hospital residential drug rehabilitation services. According to SAMHSA, California’s 1,525 substance-use treatment facilities served 90,992 clients in 2022. Despite ranking 16th for mental illness prevalence in the U.S., access to comprehensive care remains limited for many struggling with addiction and mental health issues.
