Between 2020 and 2021, California experienced an average of 19,335 deaths due to excessive alcohol consumption. These deaths represented a staggering 492,097 years of potential life lost annually. There are many health complications linked to alcohol, including chronic liver disease, various cancers, pancreatitis, high blood pressure, and mental health disorders.
A 1999 Los Angeles Health survey showed the extent of excessive alcohol use when it revealed that 50% of young adults aged 18 to 20 and 47% of adults aged 21 to 24 engaged in binge drinking. Furthermore, a 2012 Orange County survey indicated that men are more likely to drink alcohol than women, suggesting potential gender differences in drinking patterns.
