Out of State Rehab Guide - California Behavioral Health - Palm Springs

Out of State Rehab Guide

When you finally decide that it is time to get treatment, you want to be sure that you are going to a facility that can meet all of your needs. That might mean that you need to look for an out of state rehab to find the right fit. Fortunately, there are a wide range of treatment options throughout the United States that can help you put an end to your active addiction and begin living a rewarding life in recovery.

Out-of-State vs. In-State Rehab

Out-of-state rehab and in-state rehab can certainly have their similarities, but they also have a number of differences. As the client, you can expect the following differences between the two facilities:

  • Out-of-state rehab gives you the opportunity to get a break from your usual surroundings, helping to enhance your experience. Staying in-state can eliminate that benefit.
  • In-state rehab provides you with the advantage of building a support network in your own community (or close by). Out-of-state rehab does not offer the same option. However, this is not the goal of residential treatment. Building a network of support begins during the outpatient phase of treatment, which you can definitely return home for.
  • Out-of-state rehab may cost more than in-state rehab, depending on a number of factors, not the least of which is your insurance.
  • Family support at an out-of-state rehab can be less than what could be realized in an in-state rehab. For example, your family may not be there in person, but virtual family sessions are an option anywhere. Depending on your situation, being close to or far from your family may be best for you.

The most important thing that you can do for yourself is explore all of your options both in-state and out-of-state. The more information you have on both options allows you the ability to make a decision that meets your needs best.

Benefits of Out-of-State Rehab

Going to an out-of-state rehab is an ideal option for many people, especially those who have been through treatment previously at, or near, home. Not only does it give you an option to start over in a new place, to wipe the slate clean, but it also provides you with several benefits.

You gain physical distance from triggers and bad influences

Attempting to recover in the same place that you have been using in can be a terrible mistake. Triggers abound, relapse is a real and constant danger. For many people, getting away helps to support the recovery goals they are trying to develop for themselves. It can be extremely difficult to remain focused on recovery if you are worried about coming into contact with friends or family who want to visit (even if you aren’t ready), and just being in the same space that fed your addiction for so long. Gaining that physical distance can make a huge difference in your chances for success.

You can maintain anonymity

While the disease of addiction is not something anyone should ever feel ashamed or embarrassed about, it is still common for some to struggle with those feelings. If you go to an out-of-state rehab, you can maintain your anonymity better than if you were to attend a local rehab center. Not only would you be going to a different state, but you likely won’t bump into anyone who you know or who possibly knows you. This can be a relief and a comfort at a very vulnerable time.

You have an increased likelihood of remaining in treatment

Studies have shown that those who attend out-of-state rehab programs are more likely to stay in treatment longer than those who go to rehab nearby. Part of the reason this occurs is that people are more willing to push back against their desire to go back out and use when they do not know many people or places in the area. You’ll have access to a fresh environment, which may include sunshine, warmth, and positivity. Studies also show that lengthier stays in rehab lead to an increased likelihood of remaining sober and in recovery.

You have access to more treatment providers

Depending on where you live, you may not have as many treatment providers to choose from as you’ll find in different areas. You might come to find that the care that meets your needs best cannot be obtained on your home turf, but rather in another part of the country. Being willing to go out of state for rehab increases your options, allowing for the best recovery possible.

You can take a pause from daily triggers at home

Whether you are being triggered at work, school, or issues at home, it can be imperative to physically distance yourself from your daily life and all that goes with it. Rehab is a time to reflect on your situation, make plans for your future, and learn how to live in a healthy manner in the now. Going out of state for rehab allows you to focus on your needs without distractions.

How Out-of-State Rehab is Better for Your Mental Health

One of the core purposes of addiction treatment is to help improve mental health so that individuals are less likely to turn to addictive, mind-altering substances to cope with distressing events in their lives. Through a variety of different therapies, this can be made possible for all who participate in treatment. What can also be beneficial in improving one’s mental health, however, is attending an out-of-state rehab.

If you choose to attend an out-of-state rehab, your mental health can benefit in a number of ways. You:

  • Will have the opportunity to meet new people
  • Will be away from your typical, and problematic environment
  • Can heal and reset in a comfortable, secure space
  • Can gain access to more experienced treatment professionals
  • Can obtain the time and space needed to pause and focus on yourself
  • Can develop self-confidence and independence that will help guide you along the road to recovery

Insurance Coverage at Out-of-State Rehab

One of the greatest barriers to treatment is the cost. It is no secret that getting treated for addiction can run up a tab of thousands of dollars. And, in many instances, those seeking help do not have the funds available to pay for the care they need. Thankfully, nearly all treatment centers nationwide accept insurance, which can bring down the costs dramatically.

So, can you utilize your insurance coverage if you go out of state? In most cases, yes!

If your insurance only offers in-network coverage for addiction treatment, then the most important thing that you can do is reach out to your insurance provider to find out what facilities are in-network. Many insurance companies offer treatment at facilities outside of your home state. For example, if you live in New Jersey, you may be able to receive coverage for a treatment facility in the tri-state area (Pennsylvania and New York). Depending on the size of your insurance company, you may even be able to go farther from home than that. Again, it is imperative to speak directly to your insurance company to iron out these details.

If your insurance offers “out-of-network” coverage for addiction treatment, then your options are virtually limitless. You can go to any treatment center that will accept your insurance. It’s best to first identify a treatment center you wish to go to and then have them check your insurance benefits.

Cost of Out-of-State Rehab

The cost of out-of-state rehab varies based on several factors. As just mentioned, insurance can play a huge role in how much you will end up paying for your care. You may also incur a different range of prices at out-of-state treatment centers because of location factors. However, the cost of out-of-state rehab typically falls within the usual rates.

Keeping in mind that costs can vary based on several factors such as insurance coverage and services rendered, the average cost of rehab can be similar to the following:

  • Detox – $1,000 – $1,500
  • Inpatient – $6,000 – $60,000
  • Outpatient – $5,000 – $10,000

Medications and additional therapeutic services can add on to these costs, however, many out-of-state rehab programs will accept insurance, state assistance, and/or offer financing options to help mitigate the cost of care.
Rehab, regardless of if it is in-state or out-of-state, is an investment in yourself and in your future and should be viewed as such.
