According to the NCDAS, 2,195 centers provide substance abuse treatment, serving around 96,960 patients annually. In 2022, the U.S. had 17,353 substance abuse facilities, with California hosting the highest number, including 644 short-term residential treatment facilities as of March 2019, mainly in Southern California.
Between 2017 and 2019, the number of facilities offering residential care increased by 68%, while those providing inpatient care more than doubled. A 2022 SAMHSA report indicated that 3% of California’s 90,992 patients were in short-term residential rehab, and 86.5% were in outpatient programs. The California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) found that six out of ten individuals in substance use treatment were treated for drug use only, three for both alcohol and other drugs and one solely for alcohol use.
