Annually, Arizona sees over 1,900 drug overdose deaths, accounting for 3 percent of the total nationwide. Since 2019, overdose deaths in the state increased by 9.74 percent, according to NCDAS data. The influx of methamphetamine and cocaine, driven by Arizona’s proximity to the Mexican border, has been a factor, according to a United States Drug Enforcement Administration report.
According to an Arizona Behavioral Health Barometer report, in March 2019, 79,399 people in Arizona were enrolled in substance use treatment, a significant rise from 33,978 in 2015. Among those receiving treatment, 42.9% were treated for drug problems only, 16.3% for alcohol problems only, and 40.9% for both drug and alcohol issues.
