Insurance Claims, Addiction Treatment, and Mental Health Statistics in Southern California
Of 1,525 substance abuse treatment facilities included in the 2022 National Substance Use and Mental Health Services Survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 935 accepted private insurance. Of 817 mental health treatment facilities, 431 accepted private insurance. Of 179 facilities that treated both, 133 accepted private insurance.
In 2018, 5.8% of American adults reported an unmet need for mental health services, up from 4.7% in 2015, according to the American Psychological Association. Young adults 18 to 25 saw the sharpest increase, with 12.7% reporting unmet needs in 2018, compared to 5.1% in 2015. The reasons for not seeking services included cost (39%), self-reliance (26%), lack of awareness of where to go (24%), and time constraints (20%). Fewer people cited cost as a barrier compared to 2008 (39% vs. 45%).
