CHCF reports that alcohol- and drug-induced death rates are more than twice as high among men compared to women. In 2017–18, over 120,000 people received treatment in state- and county-contracted programs, with men more likely to seek help. NIDA research highlights that women face unique treatment challenges, including issues with childcare and untested treatments.
Additionally, approximately 13% of adult women engage in binge drinking, with 25% doing so weekly and consuming at least six drinks per session. In 2020, 9% of all women and 17% of women aged 18 to 25 had an alcohol addiction, according to a CDC report. Among women with substance use disorders, 4 out of 9 struggle with illicit drugs, 7 out of 10 with alcohol use, and 1 out of 7 with both. Furthermore, according to data from the United Health Foundation, 11.4% of women aged 18-49 reported misusing prescription psychotherapeutics or using other substances in the past year. A quarter of women also have a severe mental illness, according to a SAMHSA report.
